IN Wilderness Australia - A Fragile Splendour (Reed hardcover, 160pp; $35), David McGonigal guides us through the best of our wild places. Their beauty is captured in brilliant colour by the photography of McGonigal, Robbi Newman and Gunter Schmida. This is the Australia of the Dreamtime, not a footprint or tyre track in sight, no matter where we look - on the coast, in the forests, mountains or deserts. Our unique animals and insects are there, too, on page after page of excellent photographs. It's a book to inspire you to want to see more of this wonderful land.
IN Country Idylls in South Australia (124pp paperback; $12.95) Angela Burford has assembled an attractively presented directory of "alternative"accommodation in the State's main tourist regions. The options range from elegant country mansions to cottages offering bed and breakfast with only one thing in common: the author says she was interested only in owner-operated establishments with a philosophy of personalised service. Ms Burford gives an engaging description of every establishment she visited and throws in some advice on restaurants in the vicinity. Visitors to the south's wine areas will find it invaluable.
